From Bright Day Into Foggy Night

On the day we set out to Newport, with The Breakers as our primary destination, the morning was summery and sunny.  Cue crowds strolling or jogging, snapping photos along the Cliff Walk.  At the mansion, if it weren’t for the U.S. flag, it would have seemed almost as though a lot of picnickers had been let loose on the set of Downton Abbey.  All bright and sunny, like this

All rather idyllic, so it was a bit surprising to return to our little motel some miles away,  where the prospect was different in more ways than one.  While we’d been out sight-seeing, fog had been rolling in.

It was the sort of scene that brought Eugene O’Neill to mind — “The fog and the sea seemed part of each other” — OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Though the beach was cool and damp rather than bright, it wasn’t exactly abandoned.  A far cry, though, from the crowded gift shops and busy walk ways of Newport.  “Damned peaceful,” a la O’Neill.
