Yesterday I met friends for lunch at a small cafe out in the country. It was sunny and temperate, suggestive of spring. The sun encouraged our hopes, like that passage from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe ,

A strange, sweet, rustling, chattering noise …. It was the noise of running water. All around them, though out of sight, there were streams chattering, murmuring, bubbling, splashing and even … roaring. And his heart gave a great leap … when he realized the frost was over.

It was mild and hinted green outdoors yesterday.

One could be forgiven for thinking spring was coming.

It is, however, the Midwest, not Narnia where our story takes place. So today, it looks a bit more like another passage from Lewis’s Chronicles …

… a day to stay inside with a book.
